Game 1 Recap and a HumbleBrag

A humblebrag is defined by Urban Dictionary as

A form self promotion where the promoter thinks he is, almost subliminally, bragging about himself in the context of a humble statement or complaint. Everyone listening thinks he a jackass.

I'm not sure if people with think I'm a jackass or not, but please check out my tweet just moment before the start of game 1.

What a call right?

Laich, Chimera, and Ward all recorded a point and helped lead the Caps to an overtime winner in their home opener.  My reasoning behind my prediction was simple…Ward-Chimera played together all preseason.  They were the only players able to develop some chemistry. All the other Caps lines were noticeably out of sync and very different than their preseason look.

Passes were not completed, offensive pressure was not sustained, and special teams play looked awful but, for me, it is hard to blame the players.  Boudreau throughout training camp shuffled players in and out of the first line.  He continually stated his goal was to give younger players a chance to play with Ovechkin and see how they react.  I don’t have an issue doing this in the beginning of the preseason.  This should not have been the case at the end of training camp.  It felt like most of the lines were playing together for the first time.

As the season progresses, I think we will continue to see the Chimera-Laich-Ward or whoever is playing on the third line to be a huge matchup problem.  These guys all have the talent to score goals and also defend whoever is on the ice.

Overall, the Caps did not look sharp in their home opener.  I look for the Caps to look much better in their second game, but expect their special teams to continue to struggle throughout the early part of the season.
