Capitals Rank - 6 (3) The challenge for coach Bruce Boudreau is to get his players focused on the here and now when all the team really wants is to start the playoffs and get a shot at redemption.
This is probably about right for the Caps. They went to overtime against two teams they should have been able to handle in regulation. If the Caps can improve on some of the areas they are struggling (defense, goaltending, special teams) then look for them to be in the top 3 by the start of next week.
Overrated
Red Wings - 1 (8) A super start by the perennial contenders. Jiri Hudler is looking like a solid bet to have a career season this year.
The Red Wings number 1 overall? I understand they are 2-0, but they have played the Senators and the Avalanche. The Senators are the worst team in the NHL with the Avalanche close behind. ESPN must have forgot how old the Red Wings roster is. Their powerplay, which they rely on heavily, is a combined 0 for 9. Red Wings better come prepared Thursday when they face the Canucks. I'd rank Detroit right around 10th--and expect them to be there most of the year.
Underrated
Nashville Predators - 7 (19) Nothing like a pair of divisional road victories to get the season going. The Preds are younger this season, but don't underestimate them -- they will be playoff-bound again.
Nashville has suprised me by starting the year 2-0. David Legwand has been on fire, carrying much of the offense workload. Mike Fisher should come back soon. Pekka Rinne and Shea Webber make the Preds one of the best defensive teams in the NHL. If their offense can continue to put up points, I see the Predators being one of the better teams throughout the year.
